APollo NASA Moon Missions Board Game

Buffalo Games and Puzzles initially approached us to turn one of our spacecraft posters into a puzzle. Instead, they decided to have Chop Shop create the graphics for a new cooperative board game based on the Gemini and Apollo missions. Though their initial budget only covered box design, we struck a deal to design the entire game in exchange for a large number of copies to sell in our online store.

TWO BOARDS

A nice touch to this game was having two boards to first play out the Gemini missions, then expand into the Apollo moon landing board.

VISUAL GUARDS AND
CONTROL PANEL

Even though it’s a cooperative game, we needed a way to separate the players—after all, one player is supposed to be in space. Each side got a divider designed to resemble the era-specific controls of Houston’s mission control and the Apollo spacecraft.

PLAY CARS

The game included multiple card types: highly illustrated stage cards, experiment cards, and of course, crisis cards—all based on real tasks, threats, and events from the historic missions.

The spacecraft player’s view guard depicts the exact view astronauts saw from their window upon landing.

The mission control player’s view guard. Complete with era-specific coffee cup and actual pages from flight logs.

The spacecraft player’s control board. Best detail: the velcro bits of tape and the Apollo gravity-free pen.
